Eat Plastic.. If You Want

What plastic do you prefer to your spaghetti?
Graphic Design
How can I create a website for an association fighting for an environmental cause that is different from similar organizations as well as captures visitors' attention and desire to join the cause? How can you evoke action by provoking people's feelings?

This is a project for the final assignment in Graphic Design and Typography I course at Linnæus University: "A website enabling the public to take action against plastic manufacturers". The project is for a made-up association of lawyers, politicians, and the public fighting for policies in Europe to ban single-use plastic used in/for food wrapping and make production companies responsible for sustainable packaging and recycling.

My Role

Graphic Design lead
Project Manager

My Responsibilities

• Project Management - Planned project's timeline and ensured to stay on track with the deadlines
• Visual Design - based on the assignment's brief, established the visual aesthetics of the website
• Prototyping - created a prototype in Adobe InDesign based on the wireframed pages

Problem

Plastic is everywhere, yet the needed change is so delayed. There are plenty of organizations fighting against plastic use, however, it feels like they are often overlooked.

Process

I began with research through visual materials, literature research, and analysis of similar organizations. This data was analyzed and synthesized, converted into texts, and then used during prototyping in InDesign.

Outcome

A website that would stand out from many similar causes, a website that would make the visitor feel something and fuel the desire to join the cause.

PROCESS

Goals

To create a website that would inform and spark desire for action in fight against plastic use.

Target Group

Association of lawyers, politicians, and the public fighting for policies in Europe to ban single-use plastic used in/for food wrapping and make production companies responsible for sustainable packaging and recycling.

Constraints

Memorability. How do I create a memorable website that einspires for action?

Tools

Adobe Photoshop
Adobe Illustrator
Adobe InDesign
Pen & paper

Discovery

Understanding the topic

As always, I started with the research. This time, I wanted to dig deeper into the subject as well, so I read some papers and watched documentary. I was searching for information so that my design could be meaningful, informed, practical. Through carefully curated storytelling used in documentary films about plastic waste, the problem was explained with comprehensible language and showed the tragedy of the whole situation. The documentaries made me feel a lot of emotions as well as the desire to act now - this is something I wanted to include in my design.
Researching the topic. What is plastic waste? How do other websites look like?

Ideation & Sketching

When I was satisfied with all the background research, the ideation began.
Since it's a fictional association, I gave it a name No Plastic Food (NPF) and sketched some logotypes.

To begin work on the website, I have looked at other websites connected to the cause to see what's conveyed, what pages are out there, what kind of hierarchy the existing websites had.
It was also important for me to read about accessible and sustainable web design practices to have these things taken into consideration. For example, it turned out that for black is the most sustainable colour for OLED screens. I also wanted my website to look different compared to existing ones, so opted out for black backround and less imagery to avoid long load time.
I began sketching options in Photoshop to understand in practice how things should look. I showed versions to my friend, who is also an UX designer and they said one word - "boring"... That made me to rethink the whole design and with this, the final version was born.
From reading papers to drawing on paper: website ideation and sketching.

Delivery

No boring here

This website shouldn't be just boring. So I made sure to go with bright, striking images. I wanted my design to evoke feelings and be quite striking and different from other similar causes, therefore I opted for bright bold colors and images. I believe that if design evokes emotions, it is going to be remembered. Using Photoshop, I combined two images into one and then removed all the unnecessary elements to keep my image sharp, striking, and down to the necessary things. I opted to use a human so that the visitors could relate even more to the cause and feel more empathic to it.

I wanted my website to begin and end with quotes to first give the visitor “a slap of harsh reality” so to say, and then finish with the strong statement, to keep the visitor in a state that things need to start to
change, without any sugar coating. Between the quotes, I wanted to shortly introduce to the visitor to what is this website about and how to join, so that all the important information was on the first home page, from which anyone could decide whether they want to close the website or continue exploring other sections.
Working on a final version: from boring to striking.

OUTCOME

A website for the association I called No Plastic Food (NPF), not only spreads awareness about the problem but also gives an opportunity to get acquainted with the cause and join it. I wanted my design to evoke feelings and be quite striking and different from other similar causes, therefore I opted for bright bold colors and images. I believe that if design evokes emotions, it is going to be remembered. When it comes to images, I wanted people to be able to relate even more with the problem, because it may have a higher chance of getting people on board.
